No one ever said that boats were cheap, but proper maintenance is one of the most effective ways to manage your total cost of ownership. Be sure to familiarize yourself with your engine owner’s manual for all of the basic procedures for your particular boat model. If you purchased a pre-owned boat and don’t have the manual, most manufacturers now offer downloadable digital copies on their website. Avoid Ethanol-Based Fuel

Sometimes you won’t have much of a choice of fuels, but marine engines require fuel with less than 10 percent ethanol. Try to buy your fuel during peak season from a busy filling station so that you can get the freshest gas. If you’re not going to use all your fuel within two weeks, be sure to add a fuel stabilizer. Modern gasoline can begin to oxidize and form deposits very quickly, and you’re particularly vulnerable if you still have an older engine with a carburetor.

Use a Good Marine Battery

Your battery needs to be prepared to handle the rigors of the modern marine environment, so invest in a quality marine battery. Be sure that your battery is solidly secured to the tray with a rigid bracket or locking strap. Be sure to also check the battery cables and the battery terminals for any corrosion or visible signs of damage. You should also keep your battery on a battery maintainer or a trickle charger between trips.

Schedule an Annual Maintenance Visit

In addition to all of the basic boat maintenance that you perform on your own, you should schedule basic service on at least an annual basis. If you use your boat frequently, most types of engines require basic service every 100 hours. Be sure to review your owner’s manual for your manufacturer’s recommendations.

During your service, the technician will change the oil and filter on four-stroke engines, lubricate the gearcase, change the fuel filter element and replace your spark plugs if needed. He or she will also check your belts and top off your fluids. Most shops can also winterize your boat as part of your annual service. Some seasoned boat owners might be interested in learning how to winterize their boats as a DIY project, but you’re much better off leaving winterizing to the experts in our climate.
