Whether you use your boat on a regular basis or only a few times a year, it’s important that you take the proper steps to keep yourself and others safe. That’s why the experts at Thayer’s Marine have created this pre-launch checklist for boaters of all kinds.

Make a Float Plan

You should always create a float plan before you go out boating. A float plan will detail where you plan to launch and where you plan to go, as well as an estimated timetable for events. Give your float plan to a friend, family member, park ranger, or other trusted individual staying on shore. If you don’t check in at the appointed time, they’ll know that something has gone wrong and they can alert the proper authorities.

Check the Safety Supplies

No matter how small or minor the voyage, you should always bring along basic safety supplies. This includes a fire extinguisher, a waterproof communications system, and a first aid kit, along with anything else you’ll need in an emergency. These safety supplies should be in good condition and ready to use if needed.

Get Passengers Ready for Launch

Make sure that any and all passengers on your voyage know the basics of boat safety. You may also need to review the use of safety equipment and what to do in an emergency. Be sure that everyone is equipped with personal flotation devices, as well as any protective equipment they’ll need to have a safe, comfortable time on the water. Once that’s done, double-check one last time that the boat is still in good condition, and that the launching site is clear of obstructions, on-lookers, and other boats.
